Ingredients

For the Sushi Rice:

  • 2 cups short-grain sushi rice
  • 2 ½ cups water
  • ¼ cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For the Rolls:

  • 5 sheets of nori seaweed
  • 1 cup imitation crab or real crab for a luxurious touch
  • 1 ripe avocado sliced
  • 1 cucumber julienned
  • Sesame seeds optional, for garnish
  • Optional Condiments:
  • Soy sauce
  • Pickled ginger
  • Wasabi

Instructions

Prepare the Sushi Rice:

  • Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Cook the rice in a rice cooker or on the stovetop with the water.
  • While the rice is cooking, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until dissolved.
  • Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a wide bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture using a cutting motion to avoid smashing the grains.
  • Let the rice cool to room temperature before using.

Set Up Your Rolling Station:

  • Lay a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface and cover it with plastic wrap to prevent sticking.
  • Place a sheet of nori on the mat, shiny side down.

Assemble the Rolls:

  • Wet your hands to prevent sticking, then spread an even layer of rice over the nori.
  • Carefully flip the nori over so the rice is facing down.
  • Arrange the crab, avocado slices, and cucumber strips along the bottom edge of the nori.

Roll It Up:

  • Using the bamboo mat, tightly roll the nori into a cylinder, pressing gently to shape it as you go.
  • Let the roll sit for a minute to set.

Slice and Serve:

  • Using a sharp knife dipped in water, slice the roll into bite-sized pieces.
  • Sprinkle sesame seeds on top for a finishing touch.

Notes

  • Perfect Sushi Rice: Use short-grain sushi rice and mix the vinegar gently to keep the grains intact.
  • Ripe Avocado is Key: Soft but not mushy for the best creamy texture.
  • Don’t Overstuff: Keep fillings modest for a tight, easy-to-slice roll.
